Best AI Models This Week: October 12, 2026
Five models worth knowing this week. Every number here comes from two public boards. Artificial Analysis carries the intelligence index and OpenRouter carries the live price per million tokens. Nothing below is hand typed.
// In this post
- Claude Fable 5.1- The top of the board
- GPT-6 Astra- OpenAI's most capable model
- Grok 4.7- A strong model at a mid price
- MiMo-V2.6-Pro- The best value in the top half
- Claude Haiku 5.5- The cheapest strong model this week
Claude Fable 5.1

What it does
Anthropic's most capable model for coding and knowledge work. The Anthropic page announces Claude Fable 5.1 on 1 September 2026 and calls it the most capable model for coding and knowledge work with research capabilities.
Where it runs
Coding and knowledge work that needs the deepest reasoning.
It earns a place because it holds the top of the index this week among the models we have not covered lately. The Anthropic page says Fable 5.1 is its most capable model. The trade is the price you pay for output.
Artificial Analysis gives it an intelligence index of 53.35 on 12 October 2026. That is the highest index of the five. OpenRouter lists it at $10.00 per million input tokens and $50.00 per million output tokens on the same date. The strongest point is that index. The weakest point is the price. It is the most expensive of the five.
GPT-6 Astra

What it does
OpenAI's most capable model for the most demanding work. The OpenAI model page covers complex reasoning and coding plus computer use and research. It lists a 1,050,000 token context window and a 128,000 token output limit.
Where it runs
Demanding analysis and software engineering that wants the top model.
It earns a place because it sits just under Fable 5.1 on the index at the same input and output price. The OpenAI page pitches it as the most capable model for the most demanding work. It is a close second on ability.
Artificial Analysis gives it an intelligence index of 52.67 on 12 October 2026. OpenRouter lists it at $10.00 per million input tokens and $50.00 per million output tokens on the same date. The strongest point is that near top index. The weakest point is the output price. The OpenAI page also notes that prompts over 272K input tokens cost double on input and 1.5x on output.
Grok 4.7

What it does
The newest frontier model on the xAI page. The xAI page announces Grok 4.7 as its new model for reasoning and code plus voice and images and video.
Where it runs
Coding and agentic tasks that run for a long time.
It earns a place because it holds a strong index at a mid price. The xAI page calls Grok 4.7 the new model and pitches it for everything you build. The catch is that it trails the top two on ability.
Artificial Analysis gives it an intelligence index of 46.45 on 12 October 2026. OpenRouter lists it at $2.00 per million input tokens and $6.00 per million output tokens on the same date. The strongest point is that index for that price. The weakest point is that it sits well under the top two.
MiMo-V2.6-Pro

What it does
Xiaomi's flagship foundation model. The MiMo page introduces the MiMo-V2.6 series and names the mimo-v2.6-pro line in its own coding benchmark chart.
Where it runs
Demanding agent and coding work at a low price.
It earns a place because it is the best value in the upper half of the board. It scores near the top group and costs a fraction of what they do on input. The output price stays low as well.
Artificial Analysis gives it an intelligence index of 46.32 on 12 October 2026. OpenRouter lists it at $0.435 per million input tokens and $0.87 per million output tokens on the same date. The strongest point is that index for that price. The weakest point is that it still trails the top three on ability.
Claude Haiku 5.5

What it does
Anthropic's small and fast model. The Anthropic page announces Claude Haiku 5.5 on 7 October 2026 as the fastest and most efficient model in the Claude 5.5 family built for high volume and cost sensitive work.
Where it runs
High volume work where the price per token decides the choice.
It earns a place because it is the cheap pick of the week. It scores in the low forties on the index and costs cents where the top models cost dollars. A team that runs a lot of tokens can move a large workload here for a small spend.
Artificial Analysis gives it an intelligence index of 43.40 on 12 October 2026. OpenRouter lists it at $0.10 per million input tokens and $0.50 per million output tokens on the same date. The strongest point is that output price. It is the lowest of the five. The weakest point is that its index is the lowest of the five.
How to choose from this list
- Start with the price you pay for output. That is the number that grows with a long answer.
- Match the model to the job. A coding agent and a high volume chat bot do not need the same model.
- Check the context window if you feed long documents. All five here carry about a million tokens.
The boards move every week. Artificial Analysis and OpenRouter are the two sources we read for this post.
